Kurdistan Region — Kurdish forces liberated Shingal, a predominately Yezidi town besieged since August by Islamic State (ISIS) militants.

Peshmerga forces have forced ISIS militants to withdraw from the town after their heavy losses and defeat, PDK official Saeed Shingali revealed to Rudaw.

“ISIS militants are fleeing the city defeated” Zaid Ali, a Peshmerga commander on the front-lines said.

He also said, “ISIS militants are suffering heavy losses in Bahaj town, nearby Shingal”.

Kurdish leaders celebrated the victory over ISIS militants, whereby remaining Yezidis were able to reach safety, having resisted capture by ISIS.

The operation to liberate Shingal town was conducted solely by Peshmerga forces, which has forced ISIS to retreat.

“The ISIS and its militants are fleeing to Syria rapidly” Rudaw’s reporter in Shingal said.

“This is the biggest victory against ISIS since the beginning of the War. We have managed to open a corridor so the people stuck on the mountain can reach safety”, Head of Kurdistan’s national security council Masrur Barzani said.

The Kurds in Turkey (northern Kurdistan) are estimated at between 20 and 25 million. In Turkey recognizes not even the Kurds' existence. Everything is prohibited regarding Kurds and Kurdistan. The uprisings by Kurds achieved by the turn of the century and until the 30's were crushed in the most inhuman manner. Children, women and old burned in the woods or inside closed in mountain caves. Peshmerga forces have entered Sinjar district in western Mosul after killing scores of ISIL terrorists.

security source told  “The Kurdish security forces, Peshmerga, have entered Sinjar district after killing many Turkish Arabic islamic terrorists

The YPG media center said in a press release that ISIS militants attacked the Kurdish forces Friday evening, leading to a nightlong battle between both sides.

“As a result of the fighting 26 ISIS militants were killed and a number of weapons and vehicles were captured,” said the YPG.

The Kurdish force said that ISIS had attacked with tanks and heavy artillery.

On the eastern front of the city, the YPG said its fighters killed seven Islamist militants in two counterattacks against the radical group.

YPG fighters have been defending the Kurdish city of Kobane against an ISIS invasion since early September.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said in its December report that ISIS has lost about 1,400 fighters in 80 days of fighting in Syria, most of them in Kobane.

For ISIS and the U.S. led allies Kobani is the center of it all.  Kobani has become the most important battlefield in this war tactically and symbolically.

If the allies win there it’s seen as a major setback for ISIS, a huge turning point.  But if ‘ISIS’ wins in Kobani, it shows the U.S. can’t help its allies, the coalition isn’t as powerful as it seems and ISIS gains control of an entire stretch of Syria’s border with Turkey.

So now both sides are all-in in Kobani.

Dersim Massacre, 1937-1938

Hans-Lukas KIESER

In 1937-38, a military campaign took place against parts of the province of Tunceli, formerly Dersim, Turkey, that had not been brought under the control of the state. It lasted from March 1937 to September 1938 and resulted in a particularly high death toll: many thousands of civilian victims. Contemporary officers called it a “disciplinary campaign” (tedip harekâtı, a term also used by the official military historian, Reşat Halli, in his 1972 account); politicians and press, a Kemalist civilising mission (Uluğ 2007 [1939]).
